NEEDS OF A BOXER

A BOXER is a wonderful medium sized family dog.  He/she will be a great companion and friend to you and your children.  He is an active dog and WILL NEED VERY STRICT TRAINING for the first year of his life. This will require one training session a week for you and your family and 10 minutes a day reinforcement training. If you don't have the time for this training then do not get a Boxer!

He will enthusiastically welcome most people you invite into your home but can be very reserved if he feels distrustful of certain individuals. Therefore he will make an excellent watch dog, his looks and barking will scare off any intruder, although little do they know that he is a "pussy cat" at heart!

He can be stubborn and aggravating then turn around and delight and entertain you with his playful antics and exuberance for life. He will play gently with the young children, rough-house with the adults, then stand over you as if to say "come on you guys, I am just getting started".   You can hurt his feelings easily by the tone of your voice or by ignoring him.   Love him and your love will be returned ten fold.  Anyone who does not love a BOXER does not know a BOXER.

The BOXER is definitely NOT an "outdoor" breed!  If he would not be allowed to live in the house as part of your family you would be better to choose another more independent breed!  A BOXER does not have the coat needed for the cold winter and because of their shorter muzzle, they do not tolerate the heat of summer.   They must be protected from the elements, always. Besides, they would be broken hearted if they couldn't be with their people - sharing the sofa or easy chair and your nibbles, as you all watch TV in the evening.

1 -2 Years
Flashy Brindle

Has been speyed

Crystal has recently taken to killing chickens. Although she is good with our dog and cat and even the children (We have two children and the five cousins visit often), we also have birds including chickens and geese and we feel that the other (more 'chaseable' animals) have a right to feel and be safe at home. It should also be noted that Crystal is very ball orientated and even tends to forgo food for this greatest of pleasures. This means she is a smaller girl boxer but seems to always have boundless energy. No walks are ever too long and we think this is why suddenly chickens have become a great game. We wish her the best in a new home with less 'chaseable' activities.

She will need to go to a home that is willing to retrain her... and preferably likes a lot of exercise.

Harvey - Male

2-3 years

Fawn and white
Neutered

I helped out a person from Young who needed a home for Harvey - I was living in Canberra.
I have now moved to Melbourne and am staying with my sister for 1-2 yrs and her place cannot accommodate Harvey.
I gave him to a family in Wodonga, but it didn't work out there. He escaped from their back yard - he needs a 1.8 metre fence to keep him in.
He loves walks and is very affectionate - but very very lively and loves attention.

All he needs is a loving home.

Housetrained
Has not been around children

Urgent homes are required for the above dogs!

(NB: NO PUPPIES are to be sold through this resource!!)

Note to reliquishing owners: Please ensure that the person you are dealing with is a genuine Boxer lover and has the right conditions required to keep your dog happy and healthy.
  1. Ask them the questions on our Adopt a Boxer Form to help get to know the new prospective owner.
  2. Do not just have the person view the dog at your home, but insist that you visit their home and take the dog with you to see how it behaves in this new environment (children, other pets etc) and how the new prospective owner relates to the dog.
  3. Let them know the diet the dog has been kept on to avoid tummy upsets.
By taking these extra precautions you will help guarantee that this will be the last "Forever" home for your Boxer and he will be happy.
